Founded in 1959 by unionists, church leaders and peace activists, CICD has been involved in organising peace activities such as the Vietnam Moratorium, the anti-nuclear movement, Palm Sunday Rallies, opposition to the French nuclear testing, and the opposition to the two Gulf Wars. Throughout these campaigns the C.I.C.D. has worked to promote peace though it has done so in a manner that is consistent with addressing and opposing unwelcome militaristic developments but also looking beyond singular issues in order to create real change, and real peace.

When the Cold War ended it was assumed that the threat of nuclear war had subsided but that threat remains and furthermore, the threat of global militarisation is with us every day.  The C.I.C.D. currently works to overcome these threats by promoting peace, and shall continue to do so well into the future.

The University of Melbourne keeps a database of C.I.C.D. records which dates back to its inception in 1959, details of this record are available at
Melbourne University Archives - C.I.C.D.

Picture Australia also holds a catalogue of C.I.C.D. photographs.

The Campaign for International Co-operation is currently endeavouring to conduct research into its own history, with the aim of producing a lengthy written account of the rich history of the C.I.C.D. and the history of the Australian peace movement to which the C.I.C.D. is so inextricably linked. Anyone with information that may be of relevance to the history of the Campaign for International Co-operation and Disarmament (formerly Congress for International Co-operation and Disarmament) is invited, indeed urged, to Contact the C.I.C.D.
